Bike Carriers

We are very proud of our bike carrier range. The difficult question will not be whether to buy an Atera carrier, but which type of carrier to buy. If you have space on your roof , a roof bar mounting bike carrier, such as the GIRO AF, RAPIDO or BIKE LIFT is recommended. The DURO S & XL are tilting tow ball mounting carriers. They carry two, three or four bikes and are suitable for all types of tow ball. The LINEA (now NEW and improved) is the securest of rear mounting strap-on carriers. It is made of lightweight aluminium and comes with a car specific adapter kit.

Aluminium: The previous Giro was a worthy winner of the Auto Express Best Buy Award on several occasions. The aluminium Giro AF is its replacement, new for 2005. It features automatic shoulder high single handed tensioning and locking, leaving one hand to hold the bike in place. Superb!

>> Atera RAPIDO aluminium
>> Atera RAPIDO with front and rear fixings only

Atera’s best selling RAPIDO fork mount carrier now comes with an aluminium wheel support tray. Bikes with full size mud guards will almost invariably require a RAPIDO with front and rear fixings only - because the mud guard will almost certainly hit the wheel tray before the forks, i.e. preventing the forks reaching their quick release fixing. The front and rear fixings only version works best on adjustable cross bars fixed to longitudinal roof rails, so it can be adjusted for a particular wheel base.

>> Atera Tandem BIKE LIFT

Atera’s hydraulic BIKE LIFT makes easy work of roof mounting. One lift can be placed on either side of the car. You slide the saddle into its carrying loop, secure it with the safety strap, hook the handlebars into their securing cradle, and then with relatively minimal effort the bike rises to the car roof. Not the cheapest option, but well worth it if you aren’t confident that you’ll be able to lift your bike to head height without it toppling over…

Atera also makes a tandem version.

ATERA Linea Bike Carrier

The Atera LINEA is an aluminium clamp on carrier of the highest quality, supplied partially assembled, and designed to carry up to four bikes, depending on the strength of the tailgate. The three bike version weighs only 8.5 kg! Fitting the adapter kit is quick and easy work, and it’s fair to say that Atera’s adapters, which are tightened up using a special key, provide a more precise fit than Thule’s BackPac. The four bike models are for specific vehicles only and include some stainless steel in the construction. Popular applications include the Renault Megane Scenic (3 bikes), Mercedes Vito (4 bikes), Alhambra / Galaxy / Sharan series (4 bikes), and Volkswagen T4 and T5 (4 bikes).

ATERA Duro S
>> Atera DURO S

The NEW Atera DURO S is a 3 bike carrier suitable for bolt on or swan neck tow bars. The bike carrying platform has a very robust ABS plastic cover to protect the bikes from dirt and damage – bikes get surprisingly dirty when transported behind the car, and are also vulnerable to damage from loose chippings etc. The cover also allows bikes of all sizes to be carried – there’s no possibility of children’s bikes falling through the wheel supports. It's supplied in a 2 bike version, with the 3rd bike adapter sold as an extra. It comes almost fully assembled and is very easy to fit and to use.

ATERA Duro XL Bike Carrier
>> Atera DURO XL
We reckon that Atera's new DURO XL tilting carrier is the best made tow ball carrier on the market, bar none. It fits to bolt on or swan neck tow balls, and is very easy to adjust and use - both for fitting and for tilting. The frame is of galvanized and painted steel (as it has to be, to support the weight), with aluminium wheel supports for lightness and style. It's supplied as a 3 bike unit; a 4th bike adapter is available. Apart from the Allround carriers, it's the lightest of the 4 bike units available. The tilt function is easy to use, with a long handle so there's no excuse for getting bike oil on your sleeves. The upright bike holder support is of course easily removed so the carrier can be stored flat, e.g. against a garage wall.
